Pittsburgh has long been known for its innovative and sustainable practices, but the recent Allegheny Mountain Malt Sustainable Sip-Off event brought a new perspective to the forefront. Hosted by Sustainable Pittsburgh, Food21, and Allegheny Mountain Malt, this event showcased the importance of sustainability in the food and beverage industry. The competition gathered 11 regional breweries to craft beers using sustainably grown and locally produced malt, shining a spotlight on the impact of local sourcing and sustainable practices in brewing.
By combining the familiar experience of beer tasting with a focus on local agriculture, supply chains, and business practices, the Sip-Off made sustainability tangible and accessible to all attendees. Vince Mangini of Food21 and Allegheny Mountain Malt emphasized the event's ability to bring together like-minded individuals with a shared commitment to sustainability. The result was a sold-out, high-energy tasting event at Mike's Beer Bar in the North Shore, offering a glimpse into how sustainable practices are shaping the region's food and beverage economy.
The Sustainable Sip-Off was not just a beer sampling event; it was a celebration of local supply chains and sustainability. It stood out as one of the few locally-focused events that sold out during Draft week, highlighting the growing interest in supporting independent businesses and sustainable practices in the community.
Pittsburgh brewers participating in the Sip-Off competition showcased their commitment to regenerative grain, local malt production, and regional brewing. The event also marked the launch of Sustainable Pittsburgh's B.I.T.E. program, aiming to connect consumers with independently owned businesses and promote sustainable practices in the community. Bhavini Patel, Executive Director of Sustainable Pittsburgh, emphasized the importance of local sourcing and creative partnerships in driving economic development and supporting regional producers.
At the Sip-Off, professional judges scored the 11 entries, with Late Addition Brewing + Blending taking the top spot as the "Top Draft Pick." Devout Brewing and Windy Bridges Brewing followed closely behind, earning 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Tortured Souls Brewing received the "People's Choice Award," while Hazel Grove Brewing was honored with the "Brewer's Choice" award. Additionally, three brewers were recognized with "Sustainability Spotlight" awards for their commitment to sustainable practices.
The Allegheny Mountain Malt Sustainable Sip-Off event not only showcased the creativity and talent of local brewers but also highlighted the importance of sustainability in the brewing industry. By bringing together beer enthusiasts, brewers, and advocates for sustainability, the event served as a reminder of the positive impact that conscious choices can have on our community and economy.
