New Glarus Brewing Co. is embarking on a monumental $55 million project, revealing plans for a state-of-the-art facility that will transform its campus. The brewery, owned by Deb and Dan Carey, aims to solidify its legacy as employee owners for future generations. The ambitious project, in the works for two years, involves a significant expansion of the Hilltop building, including new brewing and distilling facilities.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 29, marking the beginning of construction that will continue over the next few years. During this period, the Hilltop campus will be closed to the public, with visitors redirected to the original Riverside building. This temporary closure will allow for the seamless construction of the new facilities, set to be completed by fall 2026.
The innovative design of the new facility includes a four-story addition, with two underground levels connecting to the existing structure. A new parking lot at the base of the hill will provide ample space for guests, enhancing the overall visitor experience. The retail shop, expanded in size, will greet visitors upon arrival, leading them through a journey of the brewery’s history.
Architect Katherine May, daughter of the Careys, highlighted the strategic layout of the new space, emphasizing a more cohesive and immersive experience for visitors. The revamped brewery will feature eight large copper kettles, effectively doubling its brewing capacity. This expansion aims to address operational inefficiencies and accommodate the growing demand for their acclaimed brews.
Notably, the project paves the way for the revival of Sugar River Distillery, a venture previously hindered by state regulations. With recent legislative changes allowing for distributor ownership in distilleries, New Glarus Brewing is poised to introduce a line of distilled products. Furthermore, the expansion will include enhancements to the beer garden, the addition of a bike trail connecting to the Sugar River path, and sustainable features such as geothermal heating and cooling.
