India’s local flavors are taking center stage in the world of mead brewing with the introduction of a new mead crafted from Jamun fruit. The collaboration between Catamaran Brewing Company and Moonshine Meadery has resulted in a unique honey-based fermented drink that celebrates the humble purple jamun.
The journey of creating this special jamun mead began when Catamaran Brewing Company, known for their innovative craft beers in Puducherry, joined hands with Moonshine Meadery based in Pune. The idea to blend the distinct flavors of jamun with honey took shape in 2025, marking a significant step in the craft spirit industry.
Suryakant Singh, the head brewer at Catamaran, envisioned a mead that captures the essence of local jamuns. The process involved handpicking over 60 kilograms of jamuns from orchards in Cuddalore, meticulously processing the fruit into a puree, and fermenting it with rich multi-floral honey sourced from Moonshine’s Honey Project.
Moonshine Meadery, known for its experimental small batches of mead, saw the collaboration as an opportunity to showcase their expertise in crafting unique flavors. The exchange of frozen jamun puree from Pune to Puducherry and Moonshine’s multi-floral honey to Catamaran resulted in a limited edition jamun mead that promises a delightful drinking experience.
With an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 5%, the jamun mead offers a perfect balance of sweetness and astringency, leaving a lingering taste that beckons for another sip. The collaboration between Catamaran and Moonshine exemplifies the spirit of innovation and partnership that characterizes the craft beverage industry in India.
For enthusiasts eager to savor this exclusive creation, the jamun mead is currently available on tap at Catamaran Brewing Company in Puducherry. The product will soon be introduced to select taps across Moonshine’s network in western India, offering a taste of the local flavors and craftsmanship that define this unique mead.
As consumers indulge in this new mead experience, it is worth noting that mead holds a special place in the history of alcoholic beverages. Dating back to ancient times, mead, made from honey, water, and yeast, has been revered in various cultures as the ‘drink of the gods.’
The introduction of the jamun mead not only adds a modern twist to this ancient tradition but also reflects the growing trend of incorporating indigenous flavors into contemporary brewing practices. The success of this collaboration serves as a testament to the evolving landscape of craft spirits in India, where local ingredients and innovative techniques are reshaping the beverage industry.
